Gig Review: Toxic Dancehall V, Black Swan, Bristol, 10.07.04
So Toxic Dancehall has reached its first birthday and has celebrated in style with this incredible free party. The party itself was much like the other nights; it was the fact that this was free (or entry by voluntary £2 donation to be precise but once you'd seen the guys on the door you would probably pay) that made it different. I am constantly amazed at the size of crowd that this night draws and the promoters them selves seem to be pleasantly baffled too.
The main room tonight was dominated by Death$ucker artists, with great sets from Shitmat (forthcoming 7" on Death$ucker), D'Kat (shame about the brief power failure, otherwise storming) and Parasite and Ana Kissed doing a combined audio/visual set, which was also probably the best Parasite set I've seen, absolutely killer stuff on more of a gabba tip than his normal mashed-up jungle output. Bruna, Uberdog, Fix and Alkemy provided DJ sets to top and tail the night.
Unfortunately due to the weather the line up from the garden was moved into a small corner upstairs which didn't really do it justice, especially considering the huge number of people who still sat out in the garden in the drizzle all night. Bin Ray was the only Room 2 set I witnessed and despite it being a great set the majority of the audience left in a mass exodus about halfway through, presumably because of something else that was going on rather than the music?
Number 6 is planned for October and if all goes to plan will feature DJ/ rupture (Soot, Tigerbeat6, Violent Turd, Broklyn Beats). On the strength of past shows it can't fail to deliver the goods.
