Album Review: Ascoltare - Visceral Vendor (Tripel Records)

Ascoltare - Visceral Vendor (Tripel Records)

Tripel Records debut release is this glitchy, reverb drenched, sub-bass worrying album of electronica from Dave Henson. Henson is part of the same Cambridge scene that has given us Animals on Wheels and was apparently "a leading light of the Kuala Lumpa Death Metal scene" (why do I also suspect that that could also read as the only light of the Kuala Lumpa Death Metal scene?)

Visceral Vendor's rhythms are created from seemingly found sounds of everyday items, creating effects, both gyrating and jarring, that sound like anything from a Geiger counter to ping-pong to a performance of Stomp to an accident in a kitchen.

Eastern/Oriental string sounds get plenty of use, as do other "real" instruments such as pianos and xylophones, giving an acoustic touch to the album. This isn't to say that the rest of it is lifeless, the synth pads, gently distorted drum parts and other assorted rumblings are all very warm sounding.

This is one of the most emotive examples of electronic music I've come across. Ascoltare and Tripel Records are both ones to watch.

Visceral Vendor is released 01.03.04 on Tripel Records (distributed by Cargo).
